this June the European Association of OR Societies is holding its annual conference in Leeds in conjunction with the UK OR Society. https://euro2025leeds.uk/outline-programme/#
There will be a competition at this conference for the best application of OR that serves the Common Good of Society and Humanity. https://www.euro-online.org/web/pages/1668/prize-for-or-for-the-common-good-epocg
The first winner was an application to network link poor farms and poor schools in South America to use networking to distribute food to provide school lunches that otherwise couldn’t get to market.
The second winner was a German application to help mitigate flash floods that are a growing concern with Climate Change.
This will be the third occasion of this competition.
There will be no competition in 2026 because that year there will be an IFORS (world) conference.
If you know of a colleague or a student who is working in a relevant field, participation in this could help develop his / her / their career, as well as provide an opportunity to extend the usefulness of applications of OR for the Common Good.
The closing date to apply is the end of this month, January.
